Bad Omen is a status effect that causes a raid to appear when an afflicted player enters a village.

  • 4Data values

Effect[edit]

In Java Edition, Bad Omen's potency determines the chance for illagers to be equipped with enchanted weapons when the player triggers a raid by entering a certain radius around a bed that a villager has claimed. If the raid results in player victory, the Hero of the Village's potency equals the Bad Omen's potency (capped at level 5). Bad Omen levels past the first will also give a single extra raid wave, given the difficulty level. For example with Bad Omen II-V , Easy will have 4 waves instead of 3, Normal will have 6 waves instead of 5, and Hard will have 8 waves instead of 7.

In Bedrock Edition, regardless of Bad Omen level, it always has the same effect.

The Bad Omen effect animation activating in Bedrock Edition.

Once the player gets the Bad Omen effect in Bedrock Edition, an animation similar to the one displayed when dying with the totem of undying appears, showing the effect's symbol rotating on the screen.

  • The same applies when receiving the Hero of the Village effect.

Bad Omen is a status effect and can be removed through all conventional methods, such as drinking milk or dying.

Trivia[edit]

  • If the player leaves a village during a raid, receives Bad Omen, and returns to the village, the effect is removed but does not affect the existing raid.
  • A player cannot receive Bad Omen when indirectly killing a Patrol Captain. This includes burning with fire or lava, thorns damage, drowning, explosions, and suffocation, among other things. This also includes killing a captain with fireworks shot from a crossbow.
  • If the player kills a captain while in a village in Bedrock Edition, the animation, raid bar, and Bad Omen effect appear simultaneously. The effect disappears immediately after, then 'flashes' again approximately 1 second later.

Curse of Binding is an enchantment that prevents removal of a cursed item from its armor slot.

Curse

Obtaining[edit]

This is a treasure enchantment. It is obtained only from chest loot or rarely by fishing. In Java Edition it is also available by trading for enchanted books.[1]

Usage[edit]

An item with Curse of Binding cannot be removed from any armor slot unless the player is in Creative mode, the player dies, or the item breaks. For items without durability, the player must die to remove the item, making removal in Hardcore mode impossible.

All mobs also follow the curse of binding; for example, if wearing a leather helmet enchanted with curse of binding, they cannot take it off to equip their preferred netherite helmet if they found one. A player cannot remove the enchantment using a grindstone or crafting table; instead, the item returns to the player still cursed. However, if the cursed item is a pumpkin or mob head, placing and breaking the head removes the curse.

If the keepInventorygamerule is set to true, the player keeps the cursed item even after death. Only breaking the item, if possible, removes it.

If a player applies the enchantment to a carved pumpkin and wears it, the player becomes unable to remove the carved pumpkin. If the gamerulekeepInventory is set to true or the player is in Hardcore mode, it becomes impossible for the player to remove the carved pumpkin without cheating in-game or dying in Hardcore mode. This can be used to troll other players, as the pumpkin overlay on the screen makes the game difficult to play. Because pumpkins have no durability, they are the most effective item to use this curse on. However, most players would not deliberately equip a cursed pumpkin, although a dispenser can be used to forcibly equip it onto a player.

This enchantment does not affect any non-armor items, and it does not prevent removal of items from one's inventory until it is equipped.
